Gilman's Life

Charlotte Gilman, the author of the Yellow Wallpaper, was born on July 3, 1860. Gilman was born into a family of very educated women. Her family suffered from many different things. Her family had many different problems like some members committing suicide and others having to be hospitalized. Gilman her self became diagnosed with post-pardum depression. She was treated by doctors but, since all of the doctors were men and Gilman lived in a time were women were thought to be inferior to men, Gilman was never taken seriously. The doctors would never never take her opinions or thoughts of what was going on in her life into consideration and always thought they new better. In the Yellow Paper, it says "You see John doesn't believe I'm sick." (1) It also says in the Yellow Wallpaper, "I don't like our room a bit. I wanted one down stairs that opened on the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old fashioned chintz hangings! but John would not hear of it." (2)  Gilmans treatments for her illness for were very cruel. Finally on the date August 17,1935, Gilman died. Her work the Yellow Wallpaper was published after her death.

  1. I liked how you mentioned the problems in her family. Also how her family was full of well educated women. You put "never" twice in the beginning of the 7th sentence. Forgot to end the quote and sight from the text.

  2. Jacob, I liked how you included some things on her family, and not just describing Gilman. I liked how you talked about the treatments for her illness. And how you included her date of death and that The Yellow Wallpaper was published afterwards.

  3. It was intelligent to include information about everyone in Gilman's past life. Her childhood definitely had a huge impact on her future. I agree with your statement about doctors acting as though nothing was wrong with her. Great job on focusing on the most important events in Gilman's life.
