During the time that The Yellow Wallpaper was written, women were thought of less than men. They were thought to sit at home and cook and tend to the house. They couldn't even do things such as watch a sports event because they thought that if a women saw a muscular man she would faint. Women at this time also began to rise up and speak for there rights. Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper is thought by some to be about the fight for women's rights. Some people look at certain things in the writing and think that those symbols represent something in the struggle for women's rights. In the Yellow Wallpaper, it says, "If a physician of high standing, and ones own husband, assures friends and relatives that there os really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression--a slight hysterical tendency-- what is one to do?" (1) This shows that Jane has no power. She says what is one to do. She is basically saying she can't do anything about it. Also in The Yellow Wallpaper, it says, "Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. But what is one to do?" (1) Jane again says, what is one to do. This again is telling you that her opinions will not really matter to John.

ReplyDeleteJacob, I would like to remind you that we need to add a picture to each blog. Second, the first sentence should be worded differently. Great background information about women and what they were thought to do. Lastly, great last sentence it left me wondering.
ReplyDeleteYour background information about women was very supportive to the topic. Your blog was very well written but you do need to include at least 8 sentences. A picture that relates to your topic is also missing. I would also like to remind you that you need a sentence after each link to tell what you used that website for or how it relates to your topic.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with your idea that women were unequal to men at this time period. You support that idea with several supportive details that help contribute to your blog. However, you need to describe the links with a sentence. Overall, I agree with the idea that men were the higher sex at this time period.
ReplyDeleteyour picture agrees with what the topic is. I also agree that women didn't really have rights back then. Your background information was also very supportive. I really understood what happened during the time the yellow wallpaper was written.
